Position Overview

JOB TITLE: HEAD KITCHEN SUPERVISOR

Department: Culinary Services

Classification: Seasonal Staff

Reports To: Camp Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Head Kitchen Supervisor is tasked with delivering nutritious, delicious, and budget-friendly meals for campers and staff (approximately children and teens, and 35 adults). This role encompasses overseeing procurement, meal preparation, nutrition, service, sanitation, staff management, and record-keeping.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assess kitchen and food preparation equipment needs for the upcoming season, planning for necessary purchases and repairs before camp begins.
  2. Collaborate with food consultants to design menus accommodating dietary restrictions and special needs, in partnership with the Camp Nurse, Head Counselor, and Camp Director.
  3. Establish relationships with food suppliers and coordinate payment methods with the Camp Director. Order food and supplies in alignment with enrollment figures and manage delivery logistics.
  4. Work alongside the Camp Director to maintain food and kitchen expenses within budgetary constraints.
  5. Assist the Camp Director in scheduling kitchen staff and meal timings to align with camper and staff activities.
  6. Support the Camp Director in recruiting kitchen personnel. Train and organize kitchen staff prior to the camp season. Monitor kitchen staff performance throughout the season and maintain a positive work environment. Conduct evaluations for kitchen staff at the end of the season.
  7. Oversee the setup of kitchen facilities and dining areas. Ensure proper storage of all food and equipment at the conclusion of the season.
  8. Comply with all State and Local Health Department regulations regarding food handling, service, and storage. Be available for inspections as required.
  9. Supervise the preparation of three meals daily, along with morning and afternoon snacks.
  10. Ensure a clean, safe kitchen and dining area, providing appealing presentations for all meals.
  11. Perform additional duties as necessary.
Qualifications:

  1. Experience in camp, institutional, or large-scale food service environments.
  2. Knowledge in ordering, inventory management, budgeting, food preparation, buffet service, sanitation, and commercial kitchen equipment.
  3. Ability to adapt menus and prepare meals for special dietary and health requirements.
  4. Familiarity with current health and safety regulations and practices.
  5. Demonstrated supervisory experience.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is typically conducted in a kitchen setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This role involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and other physical activities associated with setting up heavy equipment. It may also include lifting, carrying, or moving objects and equipment weighing over 50 pounds.

SUPERVISION:
Supervision is provided by the Camp Director.
