Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding role for a skilled Ironworker Helper IV to join our team at Phoenix Industrial Inc. as a Structural Steel Specialist or Heavy Industrial Construction Assistant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the construction of structural steel frameworks and structures, working as part of a crew to raise, place, and bolt or weld steel members.
  • Read and interpret measuring tools, such as tape measures, speed squares, and framing squares, to ensure accurate task performance.
  • Understand and follow plant layouts and drawing directions to ensure efficient and safe work practices.
  • Assist in setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members, and fasten steel members to cables, slings, or ropes.
  • Guide members into position using tag lines (ropes) and assist in forcing members into final position using turnbuckles, sleever bars, come-alongs, jacks, and hand tools.
  • Align holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed members by drifting drift pins or handles of wrenches through holes.
  • Align bolt holes with spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull pins, and/or drift pins, and bolt aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
  • Assist in cutting and welding of steel members to make modifications using oxyacetylene torches, cut-off wheels, porta-bans, and electric welding equipment.
  • Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision, and take direction from higher-skilled workers or foremen.
Requirements
  • 3-4 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a helper role.
  • Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with 10's and 100's, and ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement and volume.
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.
Working Conditions

This role requires working up to 12-hour shifts in varying temperatures and outside conditions, with the ability to maintain physical strength and stamina, use arms, hands, and legs fully, push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.

Ability to work in uncontrolled environmental conditions, including constant change in weather and site conditions, and moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, vests, and other required safety gear.

Ability to work at heights and abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements.

Ability to evaluate information based on measurable standards, see details in objects or drawings, and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.

Ability to visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings, keep good balance, and work at heights.

Ability to see well (either naturally or with correction) and hear well (either naturally or with correction).

Ability to coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
