Bridge Operator

Job Summary:

As a Bridge Tender with the Town of Barnstable, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our drawbridges. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, utilizing your mechanical and technical skills to maintain and operate complex bridge machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

• Safely operate and maintain drawbridges in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations and procedures.
• Measure, record, and log environmental and bridge operating data as required.
• Routinely monitor, perform basic diagnostics, and repair/maintain bridge machinery.
• Assist with traffic control as needed and perform routine custodial duties.

During the non-bridge operating season:

• Report to the Highway Division Supervisor for assignment to a DPW crew(s) as a Highway Laborer/Craftsperson.
• Perform routine manual work in public works construction and maintenance activities.

Requirements:

• High school diploma with one year of experience in public works related activities or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• CDL Class B driver's license or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
• Must be able to swim.
• Massachusetts Class 4G Hoisting License and Massachusetts 2B and IC Hydraulic licenses.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of and experience with heavy-duty mechanical/electrical equipment.
• Knowledge of traffic flagging rules and regulations, U.S. Coast Guard regulations governing waterways and bridges, and other Federal, State, and Local regulations and procedures.
