Job Title: Associate Attorney

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Associate Attorney to join our team at The Colwell Law Group, LLC. As a key member of our family law practice, you will be responsible for providing exceptional legal representation and support to clients in Albany, NY, dealing with family legal matters such as divorce, child custody, spousal support, adoption, and other related issues.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough legal research and prepare various legal documents, including petitions, motions, and settlement agreements, for cases involving family law and divorce.
  • Advocate for clients in court proceedings, including trials and hearings, ensuring their interests are represented effectively in family law and divorce cases.
  • Offer client counseling services, guiding them on their legal rights, responsibilities, and potential outcomes concerning family law and divorce matters.
  • Manage a caseload of family law and divorce cases, maintaining regular communication with clients to keep them updated on case progress.
  • Participate in negotiation sessions aimed at reaching settlements outside of court and engaging in alternative dispute resolution methods like mediation.
  • Collaborate with the Regional Managing Attorney to foster a supportive work environment and mentor a team of legal professionals.
  • Travel to various courts and proceedings across central New York State, with occasional travel to Albany and Saratoga Springs, NY, as needed.
  • Meet the billable hour requirement set by the firm and work closely with the billing department to ensure precise client billing.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in family matrimonial cases, with a preference for such background.
  • A minimum of 1 year of general litigation experience is mandatory for applicants.
  • Holding a membership in good standing with the New York State Bar is a requirement, and memberships in other state bars are advantageous.
  • While not mandatory, prior experience in private law firms, corporate, or government settings is desirable.
  • Proficiency in managing sensitive legal matters such as divorce, child custody, domestic violence, and matrimonial disputes is crucial.
  • A deep understanding of the New York Family Court Act and Domestic Relations Law is necessary.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills are expected from candidates.
  • Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility in handling changing priorities and deadlines are essential.
  • A positive collaborative attitude is key for effective teamwork.
  • The ability to advocate effectively in court and office settings, managing high-stress litigation matters with composure is required.
  • Maintaining empathy, humility, patience, and professionalism in interactions with colleagues and clients from diverse backgrounds is vital for success in this position.
