Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a distinguished National Historic Landmark and accredited institution, is seeking a Conservation Assistant to contribute to the stewardship of its diverse collections. This role involves the meticulous care, preservation, and conservation of various artifacts, including furnishings, decorative arts, textiles, paintings, outdoor sculptures, and architectural elements. The Conservation Assistant will also play a vital role in the historic preservation of the estate, ensuring the integrity of both the collections and the surrounding gardens.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct examinations and treatments of objects and decorative finishes.
- Evaluate damage to architectural elements and collaborate with the Lead Conservator to establish treatment methodologies.
- Review architectural and engineering documentation to identify conservation needs and oversee external conservation treatments.
- Assist in the preparation of Requests for Proposals related to conservation, including specifications and permitting documents.
- Support the Lead Conservator in achieving long-term conservation objectives for decorative objects, furnishings, and other significant surfaces.
- Manage supply inventory and chemical storage for the conservation studio.
- Maintain comprehensive conservation documentation and generate detailed condition and treatment reports.
- Collaborate with the Collections Care Team to execute large-scale conservation projects.
- Assist the Capital Projects team in planning and executing various initiatives.
- Engage in disaster preparedness and recovery efforts, along with safety training for staff.
- Work with colleagues to develop funding proposals and grant applications.
- Report on conservation initiatives to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Represent the organization at professional conferences and meetings.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Conservation, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in Objects Conservation or Architectural Conservation.
- In-depth knowledge of conservation theories, principles, and practices, including techniques, tools, and materials.
- Ability to work across various mediums and manage conservation projects effectively.
- Strong writing skills for clear and concise proposals and reports.
- Excellent communication skills for collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Experience in training and supervising personnel involved in conservation activities.
- Demonstrated leadership and project management capabilities.
- Positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to teamwork and innovation.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
