Position Overview

This role is integral to Mercy's commitment to patient-centered care, embodying professionalism, respect, and compassion. The Registered Nurse is responsible for collaborating with unit-specific team members to identify clinical challenges, formulate care plans, and educate patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate clear and clinically relevant communication with patients, families, and colleagues during handoffs and as necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Exhibit proficient assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills tailored to each patient's care plan.
  • Continuously evaluate patient and family needs to deliver quality care based on a patient-centered model.
  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment to implement care plans, nursing interventions, and procedures.
  • Maintain precise and timely documentation of nursing care provided, ensuring integration of information for the healthcare team in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Serve as a role model for both current and new staff, fostering a healthy work environment that supports departmental goals.
  • Demonstrate respect and consideration for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and colleagues to promote a professional and courteous atmosphere.
  • Guide licensed and non-licensed personnel in delivering patient care as assigned.
  • Exhibit effective communication skills appropriate for all ages, addressing patient needs, including non-verbal cues, fears, anxieties, and cultural/language barriers.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and life-threatening situations within the scope of practice.
  • Adhere to and advocate for patient safety practices throughout the care experience.
  • Collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Provide ongoing education to patients and their families.
  • Delegate tasks to other nursing staff, including licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and patient care technicians.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Integrate ethical principles and professional standards in caring for patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses, advocating for their wishes and preferences.
  • Communicate compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding end-of-life issues.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including medical directors, social workers, and chaplains, to develop comprehensive care plans for complex health situations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong foundation in fundamental nursing principles and procedures.
  • Proven competency in unit-specific skills.
  • Ability to deliver safe and effective basic nursing care.
  • Exemplary customer service skills, including both verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Create a welcoming environment for all healthcare team members.
  • Commitment to continuous self-development and learning.
Professional Experience
  • A minimum of two years of experience in oncology, medical/surgical, or hospice nursing is preferred.
Education
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa or a compact state is required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association, is required.
  • Completion of Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training is required.
  • A valid driver's license and personal automobile insurance are required.
Physical Demand Requirements
  • Heavy lifting: Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally for patient transfers.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs. for controlled falls.
  • Ability to lift 15 lbs. overhead occasionally.
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs. of horizontal force, with occasional up to 35 lbs. and rare up to 50 lbs.
  • Capability to administer CPR.
