Position Overview

As part of the Office of Technology Strategy & Innovation (OTSI), which focuses on technology strategy, research, and development, you will play a pivotal role in architectural design, problem-solving, and security. You will work with a small team of Architects to collaborate with development teams, Solutions Architects, vendors, and other stakeholders to define and implement architectural vision, ensuring continuous improvement of solutions operating on OCC's core real-time data streaming and compute infrastructure platforms, including Kafka, Flink, and Kubernetes in a hybrid environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with cross-functional teams to design, create, and evaluate software application architectures specifically for streaming use cases.
  • Guarantee fault tolerance, scalability, and low-latency processing in streaming applications.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to establish deployment strategies and manage scalability.
  • Enhance streaming application performance through configuration optimization, resource utilization monitoring, and bottleneck identification.
  • Implement best practices for efficient data serialization, compression, and network communication.
  • Develop and maintain architecture documentation, including system diagrams, data flows, and component interactions.
  • Manage vendor relationships and participate in escalation sessions and postmortems.
  • Assess and recommend tools and frameworks that improve the performance and reliability of our streaming systems.
  • Stay updated on industry trends related to Kafka, Flink, and Kubernetes.

Qualifications:

  • [Required] Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate and promote best practices with technical stakeholders.
  • [Required] Advanced problem-solving abilities and a logical approach to addressing challenges.
  • [Required] Experience executing spikes and providing code samples that demonstrate best practices in developing solutions on Kafka and Flink.
  • [Required] Proficiency with DevOps tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines.

Technical Expertise:

  • Expert-level knowledge of Kafka and Flink.
  • In-depth understanding of on-premises networking and hybrid connectivity to cloud services like AWS and Azure.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and various cloud services.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.

Education and Experience:

  • [Preferred] Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • [Required] Over 10 years of experience in architecting mission-critical cloud and on-premises real-time data streaming and event-driven architectures.
  • [Required] More than 10 years of experience with Java.
  • [Required] At least 5 years of specific experience with Kafka and Flink.
  • [Preferred] 5+ years of experience with Kubernetes.

Certifications:

  • [Preferred] Confluent Certified Developer for Apache Kafka.
