Job Summary

Meggitt Defense Systems is seeking a skilled Composite Fabrication Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our production team, you will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, and performing composite layup operations.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Composite Fabrication: Work from process sheets or verbal instructions to identify the type and sequence of operations needed to construct a variety of parts to meet contractual requirements.
  2. Tooling and Fixturing: Prepare tooling/fixturing used for fabrication and coupon testing.
  3. Equipment Operation: Operate standard equipment to remedy in-process conditions such as excess or insufficient resin, trapped air pockets, or delamination.
  4. Material Preparation: Prepare ingredients such as resins, catalysts, fillers, accelerators, and colors, according to process.
  5. Forming and Laminating: Set up and operate forming machines and presses, or laminate plastic cloth and resins or premium pregnated cloth onto layup mold or bonding fixture, to shape parts.
  6. Vacuum Bagging: Wrap bonding fixture or mold in vacuum bagging materials, attach fittings to mold or fixture, such as vacuum connections, thermocouples, and probes, and exhaust air from vacuum bag to prepare lamination for curing or bonding.
  7. Cutting and Layout: Cut material to size using shears, knives, cutters, scissors, router, or saw. Lay out cutting lines on materials, such as sheet stock, fiberglass, or core maximum, following template pattern, blueprints, sketches, or sample part, using measuring and marking instruments.
  8. Curing and Testing: Set up and operate curing ovens and autoclaves to meet defined objectives as needed. Cures product either under heat lamps or in oven, hooking appropriate heat and cooling lines, adjusting steam pressure and water valves as needed. Verify work using verniers, height gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, etc. Perform structural testing utilizing mechanical test equipment to verify bond line integrity.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A High School Diploma
  • 2-4 years of experience working as a Composite Technician, Assembler, or Machinist in the Aerospace, Auto, or Boat Manufacturing industry
  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical drawings
  • Good mechanical skills
