Job Summary:

The Pharmaceutical Care Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality pharmaceutical care to patients and healthcare professionals at Appalachian Regional Healthcare. This role involves supervising and performing various functions in the inpatient drug distribution program, including the accurate and efficient dispensing of outpatient prescriptions and the preparation and delivery of total parenteral nutrition solutions, chemotherapy, and other medications for intravenous/irrigation therapy.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervise and perform the functions involved in the inpatient drug distribution program
Supervise and perform the functions involved in the accurate and efficient dispensing of outpatient prescriptions
Supervise and perform the functions involved in the I.V. Admixture Program to include the accurate and efficient preparation and delivery of total parenteral nutrition solutions, chemotherapy, antibiotics, and other medications for intravenous/irrigation therapy
Review and verify medication orders for accuracy and completeness
Monitor patients' drug therapy to detect/prevent drug interactions, contraindications, and other adverse reactions
Make appropriate interventions to improve patient care
Use and be proficient in the operation of the pharmacy computer system
Compound and dispense medications and other pharmaceutical agents/products
Obtain pertinent patient medication/medical information
Provide current and accurate drug information to patients and healthcare professionals
Maintain appropriate records and inventory on all drugs/pharmaceutical agents
Monitor the proper storage and distribution of patient floor stock, controlled drugs, and emergency medications
Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals
Train and supervise pharmacy supportive personnel as assigned
Serve on hospital committees as assigned
Assume the duties of the Director of Pharmacy when assigned
Provide pharmaceutical care in assigned locations as directed by Central Pharmaceutical Services
Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, Pharm D., or other advanced degree
Licensure eligibility in states where expected to practice pharmacy

Physical Demands:

This role requires the ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently; and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
