Job Description

The Senior Electrical Project Engineer within the Development Engineering team at EDP Renewables North America LLC supports the Engineering team in managing engineering requests for all projects in Development. This role involves supporting all aspects of electrical design for solar, energy storage, and other renewable technology projects for utility-scale projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting development projects for electrical engineering-related queries, including CAPEX input, early Engineering and Construction questions, and interconnection queue coordination with the Transmission Interconnection and Engineering Execution team.
  • Providing PV/MV engineering support to the Solar Business Development Engineering and Storage Business Development Engineering groups.
  • Maintaining active involvement in all phases of Development Engineering work related to electrical design, including solar project siting, DC and AC collection system routing, project substation siting, generator lead line routing, interconnect switchyard siting, and interface-related crossing exhibits and agreements.
  • Creating conceptual design layouts and detailed single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and site layouts in AutoCAD for utility interconnection applications, electrical permits, and EPC RFP documents.
  • Developing models for renewable projects using ETAP software.
  • Ensuring the electrical portion of the BoP/EPC and long-lead equipment estimate is optimized by providing project layouts and MV one-lines that reflect optimized layouts, along with constructability and operability to maximize Power Purchase Agreement award potential.
  • Reviewing and interpreting design drawings, specifications, and documents related to project design.
  • Creating and maintaining a template library of drawings and calculations required for projects at various stages of development and design.
  • Analyzing complex engineering problems and offering effective and efficient resolutions in a timely manner while working on several projects simultaneously.
  • Conducting value-engineering studies of alternative design approaches.
  • Maintaining and improving existing scope of works, guidelines, specifications, schedule, and budget templates.
  • Participating in project meetings and conference calls.
  • Reviewing interconnection-related documents, including Feasibility Studies, System Impact Studies, Facility Studies, Generator Interconnection Agreements, Interconnection Handbooks, and coordinating with the Execution Engineering Group to ensure requirements (including NERC and FERC) are communicated for a compliant project design.
  • Assisting the Electrical Engineering Manager in overseeing, guiding, and managing the work of third-party consultants.
  • Occasionally participating in meetings with utilities and Independent System Operators and guiding discussions on project behalf.
  • Serving as an interface between the Engineering group and internal clients, including Transmission Interconnection, Development, Construction, Operations, Environmental, Estimating, Energy Assessment, Health & Safety, Procurement, Legal, and Central Technical Direction, to facilitate interdepartmental relations.
  • Creating and maintaining databases and various reports to streamline internal processes.
  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Working with the Electrical Engineering Studies group and Central Technical Department to support early-stage electrical studies required to support Development, Transmission Interconnection, and Execution Engineering teams.
  • Providing necessary technical documents, including one-line diagrams, interconnection studies or agreements, design criteria, and specifications, to support RFI and RFP releases to potential construction contractors to gather intel for CAPEX refresh and potential contract award.
  • Reviewing RFI responses and working with Estimation, Construction, Procurement, and Development to update CAPEX estimates as necessary.
  • Supporting technical reviews of IM&A projects by providing technical memos.
  • Implementing industry and company best practices consistent with the Central Technical Direction initiative.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • 3 – 5 years of planning, design, and engineering experience is required.
  • Reneable Energy experience is preferred.
  • Power utility experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and codes, including National Electric Code (NEC), Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
  • Understanding of all applicable aspects of the electrical engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of Power System software is preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project and/or Primavera preferred.
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise document controls systems/processes a plus.
