Position Overview

Summary:

Community Rowing Inc. is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Assistant Coach for our competitive U-17 Girls rowing team. This role involves working closely with the Head Coach to cultivate a supportive, challenging, and effective training atmosphere for young athletes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coaching Duties:
    • Implement practice strategies on the water or during training sessions under the Head Coach's guidance.
    • Instruct athletes in a broad range of skills to achieve high levels of rowing proficiency through a structured and safe training regimen.
    • Encourage a team-oriented environment that promotes both physical and mental well-being, focusing on the development of each athlete.
    • Educate athletes on effective teamwork, leadership, fitness, injury prevention, goal setting, and mental readiness.

  • Equipment Management:
    • Assist the Head Coach in the maintenance and management of equipment, ensuring proper rigging for crews.
    • Collaborate with the Equipment Scheduling Manager and other coaches to optimize the use of CRI resources.
    • Work alongside CRI staff to plan and schedule regattas, including logistics for travel and transportation of boats and athletes.
    • Support the Head Coach in communicating vital information regarding race logistics to parents and volunteers.

  • Compliance:
    • Ensure adherence to USRowing and CRI regulations for all athletes and staff.
    • Maintain compliance with rowing rules on the Charles River and other practice locations.

Additional Duties:

  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in coaching competitive teams, particularly in sweep rowing, with an emphasis on technique, fitness, and safety.
  • Ability to support the Head Coach's training plans enthusiastically.
  • Familiarity with rigging various classes of sweep boats for this age group; sculling rigging skills are a plus.
  • Experience in launch handling and basic equipment care.
  • Passion for working with young athletes and understanding their unique developmental needs.
  • Strong planning skills combined with the ability to address practical challenges in real-time situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and mentoring abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Alignment with CRI's mission and values.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate uneven surfaces safely between water vessels and docks.
  • Capacity to lift equipment as needed for outings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in various weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
