JOB OVERVIEW

The General Merchandise Clerk plays a vital role in managing a diverse range of products, including health and beauty items, over-the-counter medications, snacks, publications, and seasonal goods.

This position involves assisting customers with their inquiries and ensuring that shelves are adequately stocked and organized.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Welcome and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Maintain the General Merchandise section by organizing and restocking products as necessary.
  • Order, receive, store, and display merchandise while adhering to inventory management and product quality standards.
  • Design and set up product displays, rearranging items to enhance store appearance, and manage product damages and returns in line with company guidelines.
  • Acquire knowledge of store products and their locations to effectively guide customers.
  • Ensure accurate pricing of merchandise.
  • Provide assistance to customers regarding product specifications, care, and sizes.
  • Communicate product information and pricing clearly to customers and team members.
  • Answer phone calls to assist both internal and external customers.
  • Organize merchandise on the sales floor, ensuring neatness and returning excess stock to designated areas.
  • Keep the work area and stockroom clean and organized.
  • Follow safety protocols when handling products or using equipment.
  • Report any concerns regarding product quality, stock shortages, or slow-moving items to the department manager.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage merchandise orders and address minor customer complaints in the absence of management.
  • Implement sales strategies as directed by management.
  • Address spills and maintain a safe shopping environment.
  • Report incidents of theft, shoplifting, unauthorized discounts, or property damage to management.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Successful completion of a Math Test is required.
  • Strong customer service abilities are essential.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Occasionally required to push or pull up to 100 lbs., climb up to 6 feet, balance, crouch, talk, and smell.


 Frequently required to carry up to 50 lbs., lift up to 50 lbs., stoop, and kneel.

 Continuously required to stand and walk on tile/concrete, demonstrate manual dexterity, reach overhead, and maintain visual and auditory awareness.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises, slippery surfaces, hazardous equipment, sharp objects, skin irritants, and toxic substances.

 Frequently required to twist the back and neck and navigate cluttered areas.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Varied and irregular work schedules.
  • Work environment is typically indoors with controlled temperatures.
