Position Summary:
The Plant Nursery Operations Manager is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service to both contractors and retail clients at Watkins Nurseries, Inc. This role leverages extensive horticultural knowledge to assist customers in selecting the right plants and ensuring their proper care and maintenance. The manager will also provide recommendations for additional products and services to fulfill project requirements while maintaining a well-organized and safe nursery environment.
- Daily Operations: Oversee the routine operations and upkeep of the nursery, including maintenance, production, pest control, ordering, vendor management, and staffing.
- Customer Communication: Handle incoming calls professionally, providing information on order status, product availability, current promotions, and store events. Coordinate with customers regarding their orders and arrange for necessary logistics.
- Plant Care: Ensure the health and visual appeal of plant materials to reduce inventory loss. Responsibilities include pruning, regular watering, and optimal placement of plants based on sunlight and shade requirements.
- Logistics Management: Supervise the preparation and transportation of plants, ensuring proper delivery and inspection upon arrival.
- Merchandising: Effectively display plants within the nursery to maximize space and enhance customer access. Regularly adjust plant arrangements to accommodate new stock.
- Customer Assistance: Engage with customers to understand their project needs and provide expert advice on plant selection and care techniques, ensuring their success in gardening.
- Sales Opportunities: Identify potential sales opportunities by assessing customer needs for additional products or services that may complement their projects.
- Presentation Standards: Maintain updated signage, pricing, and labeling to ensure a professional and organized presentation of merchandise.
Work Environment:
This position primarily involves outdoor work, adapting to seasonal growing conditions and the availability of plant stock. Punctuality and the ability to work in varying weather conditions are essential.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a sales role, with at least 5 years of horticultural knowledge.
- Familiarity with a diverse range of plant species, local growing conditions, and plant care techniques.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to resolve customer issues effectively.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- High School Diploma or GED required; additional coursework or an Associate's Degree in relevant fields is preferred.
- Experience with inventory management and point-of-sale systems.
- Preferred experience with small engine or farm machinery.
- Management experience is advantageous.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Google Apps and Microsoft Office.
- Bilingual candidates are preferred.
