Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job Description:

The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our engineering department, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing mechanical systems for our facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and prepare plans and specifications for new construction, alteration, or repair of building mechanical systems.
  • Conduct or direct research on complex engineering projects and prepare original proposals and reports.
  • Lead teams on projects of great technical complexity or with potential impact on Agency engineering operations and infrastructure.
  • Perform all mechanical computations and analyses, including cooling and heating loads, energy analysis, cost comparison, equipment sizing and selection, hydraulic calculations, design flow, head, and pressure losses for HVAC, sanitary, domestic water, and fire protection systems.
  • Ensure projects are designed with maximum resource efficiency and sustainable building practices.
  • Conduct field investigations for Mechanical/HVAC/Plumbing/Fire Protection problems at facilities and provide thorough and complete engineering reports with recommendations for appropriate actions.
  • Review consultants' designs, calculations, and specifications of existing and new systems and make complete evaluations with recommended action.
  • Work closely with agency staff, consultants, other governmental representatives, landlords, and contractors in seeing that project objectives are recognized and attained.
  • Participate in construction administration activities, including site visits, construction meetings, and review of shop drawings and change orders.
  • Sign and seal engineering and other official documents.
  • File projects at Department of Buildings (DOB), Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), New York City Fire Department (FDNY), and other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Oversee the development of the units' quality standards and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineers License.
  • Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • A master's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the mechanical engineering experience required.

Special Note:

In addition to the above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
