Position Overview

Under direct supervision, participates in a structured training program at a designated law enforcement academy for newly appointed Police Officers.

Key Responsibilities
The individual must possess the capability to:
  • Engage in and successfully complete a structured training regimen for entry-level law enforcement personnel, encompassing areas such as report composition, legal protocols for arrest and seizure, defensive driving techniques, relevant vehicle and penal codes, officer safety, and physical conditioning.
  • Execute a diverse range of police support functions, which may involve dispatch operations, record management, serving as a desk officer, and assisting in strategic planning and research initiatives.
  • Acquire knowledge of various policing methodologies aimed at enhancing and maintaining the quality of life within the community, including community-oriented policing and intelligence-driven strategies that foster positive interactions between the Police Department and residents.
  • Develop, nurture, and sustain constructive relationships between the community and the Police Department.
  • Promote community engagement and collaborative problem-solving efforts between the Police Department and local residents, striving to establish diverse partnerships that are innovative and resilient to ensure a thriving community.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Articulate thoughts clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and uphold cooperative working relationships with individuals encountered during the course of employment.
  • Perform any additional tasks or responsibilities deemed necessary for the effective operation of the department.

Working Environment: The position requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping as part of daily activities. It also necessitates fine motor skills for report preparation using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the role requires visual acuity for observing crime scenes, handling evidence, and operating a firearm. As a law enforcement officer, the incumbent may need to pursue and apprehend suspects, navigate uneven surfaces, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Incumbents may encounter physical threats, verbal confrontations, and other high-stress scenarios.
Qualifications and Training Requirements
A combination of experience and training that equips the individual with the necessary knowledge and skills is required. The individual must demonstrate the ability to:
  • Successfully complete a training program for entry-level law enforcement officers.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Accurately observe and recall names, faces, numbers, incidents, and locations.
  • Learn to handle and maintain firearms properly.
  • React swiftly and judiciously in emergency situations, accurately assessing circumstances and individuals.
  • Analyze challenges, identify alternative solutions, foresee the outcomes of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in alignment with objectives, free from bias against any group.
  • Evaluate situations quickly and objectively to determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, assess, and utilize facts and evidence effectively.
  • Comprehend, interpret, and apply relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and grammatically correct written documentation.
  • Meet the physical standards of stature, endurance, and agility set by the City.
  • Fulfill the requirements for a Police Officer as stipulated in the California State Government Code.
  • Understand and execute both oral and written instructions.
  • Foster and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
Experience/Education:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Additionally, candidates must meet the minimum standards outlined by the California Government Code Section 1031:
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Undergo fingerprinting for a search of local, state, and national fingerprint databases to disclose any criminal history.
  • Exhibit good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, or have completed higher education from an accredited institution.
  • Be found free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that could adversely affect the execution of law enforcement duties.
Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent throughout employment.
