Radiation Therapy Specialist

Objective:
Under the supervision of a radiation oncologist, administers radiation therapies to patients as prescribed and captures localization images in accordance with the planned treatment protocol.
Key Responsibilities:
Facilitates the orientation and oversight of students during their clinical rotations. Supports the Chief Therapist in assessing student performance.
Employs effective communication strategies and interpersonal skills to elucidate treatment-related procedures. Monitors patients for anticipated and unforeseen reactions to treatments and communicates findings to the relevant staff members. Reinforces patient education regarding side effect management and alerts medical/nursing staff to any non-compliance. Ensures a safe and organized treatment environment. Under the guidance of the Radiation Oncology Manager, provides on-call coverage as necessary. Demonstrates proficiency in information systems and is adept in all computer applications required for the role.
Assists at other UPMC Radiation Oncology facilities when necessary.
Engages in regulatory compliance activities and maintains continuous departmental readiness for inspections and evaluations.
Adheres to all radiation safety protocols.
Wears radiation monitoring and identification badges at all times.
Maintains HIPAA compliance consistently. Completes annual clinical competencies as mandated.
Reports any equipment issues to the appropriate site leadership.
Executes treatment, simulation, and the creation of immobilization devices and shielding, radiosurgery, and brachytherapy procedures when applicable, in accordance with written prescriptions and treatment plans.
Guarantees the quality of treatment delivery through thorough and accurate documentation of treatment records.
Ensures the quality and consistency of treatment portal placement by capturing portal images in line with departmental protocols.
Explains treatment procedures to patients and/or their families. Responds effectively to patient inquiries and refers medical questions to the appropriate personnel. Under the direction of a radiation oncologist, captures localization images as per the planned treatment delivery. Assists the physician or nurse in administering contrast agents utilized during treatment localization.
Participates in training programs necessary for maintaining ARRT Certification.
Operates in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
Engages in accurate and complete charge capture activities. Notifies site leadership of supply requirements. Maintains travel expenses in accordance with policy. Utilizes all UPMC Cancer Centers resources efficiently.
Prioritizes patient safety. Conducts and documents daily and weekly quality assurance activities for assigned equipment. Records findings that fall outside the established range set by Physics. Notifies the Chief Therapist immediately of any results that deviate from normal operational ranges.
Contributes to initiatives aimed at measuring and enhancing the quality of care within the Department, such as Press Ganey, Quality Improvement Measures, Chart Rounding, and Department Meetings.
Collaborates with the Radiation Oncologist, Manager, and all team members to uphold high standards for quality service.Completion of a formal radiation therapy technology program from a JRCERT-accredited institution is required.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ARRT Registration in good standing or Board Eligibility within six months of hire. Must maintain 24 CEUs per Biennium as required for ARRT Certification and Licensure. CPR certification is required within 30 days of beginning employment. CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
