This position entails semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, construction, upkeep, and repair of water and sewer systems, conducted under general supervision, with potential lead worker responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and remove private water and sewer connections, water mains, sewer mains, meter pits, hydrants, valves, and water meters.
- Repair, clean, and maintain water mains, sewer mains, valves, hydrants, catch basins, private home connections, manholes, sidewalks, stop boxes, and related equipment.
- Install, repair, and remove water meters; manage water service activations and deactivations; inspect, repair, or replace faulty meters; investigate and report consumer complaints.
- Record water meter readings using electronic devices; inspect meters and report leaks, stopped or defective meters, broken seals, or tampering.
- Construct catch basins, manholes, curbs, and sidewalks, including setting forms and mixing, pouring, and finishing cement.
- Clean catch basins, sewers, and manholes; apply deodorizer, rat poisons, and root killer to sewer mains as necessary.
- Conduct routine checks and maintenance on hydrants and water main valves, ensuring cleanliness and proper operation; document findings on logs and spreadsheets.
- May act as a lead worker on a crew while performing various tasks; prepare completed work orders and reports to record parts, tools, and materials.
- Safely operate various vehicles, equipment, and power tools to complete repairs and maintenance activities; may operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, hydro-excavators, and sewer cleaning equipment.
- Backfill water and sewer excavations with appropriate materials after maintenance work is complete.
- Manage fire hydrants opened by neighborhood groups during hot weather; sometimes dealing with highly emotional crowds.
- Read water and sewer maps and utility prints.
- Locate and stake all water and sewer mains and appurtenances using field measurements or electronic devices, following the one call Miss Dig System.
- Perform various tasks in the yard and assist in the stockroom as needed.
- Carry out other related duties as required.
Job Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer systems, including working with water and sewer connections, water mains, sewer mains, meter pits, fire hydrants, and valves used in the water distribution system required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group (A) with air brakes and N endorsement.
- Possession of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy S-4 Certification required; must possess the ability to obtain an S-3 Certification within two (2) testing cycles.
- Knowledge of basic construction, repair, and maintenance methods, procedures, tools, equipment, and materials.
- Knowledge of safe work practices under hazardous conditions such as confined space entry and working in the public right-of-way.
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand blueprints and construction drawings; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations.
- Uses computers, handheld mobile devices, software applications, and automated systems to collect, maintain, analyze, and communicate information.
- Must have an acceptable attendance record.
- Ability to identify, properly use, and safely operate common hand tools, power tools, and power equipment including an excavator, backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck, forklift, and learn to operate the sewer camera truck and sewer vac truck; must maintain a forklift operator license.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms; frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, pushing or pulling, grasping, manipulating or making small precise hand movements; occasionally requires tasting or smelling; work has special vision requirements - close and distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and/or peripheral vision; vocal communication is required to express detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, and/or quickly; hearing is required to hear detailed information through oral communication and/or make fine distinctions in sound; work regularly requires working near or moving mechanical parts, working in outdoor conditions and machinery that produces vibrations; frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and exposure to blood borne pathogens, occasional use of breathing apparatus, work is generally performed in a very loud noisy location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
