Job Summary

The County of Monroe seeks a highly skilled and experienced Public Defender/Counsel Administrator to oversee the county's indigent defense system. This key role is responsible for ensuring that adult defendants receive competent legal representation in criminal proceedings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct a staff of in-house contracted defenders and contracted roster attorneys to provide legal representation.
  • Screen, select, and maintain a roster of eligible attorneys for case assignment, evaluating attorney performance and authorizing payments.
  • Authorize investigative and expert witness resources, and perform other duties associated with the provision of competent legal representation.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to staff, ensuring strict conformance to all legal, procedural, and MIDC requirements.
  • Draft and submit compliance plans and grant applications to MIDC.
  • Maintain all administrative, budgetary, and supervisory functions of the department.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • At least 7 years of progressively more responsible experience in the practice of criminal defense or the equivalent.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan and a member in good standing with the Michigan Bar Association.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Pass background check and pre-employment screening.
