Job Overview:

The State of Montana is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Appellate Defender to join our team. As an Appellate Defender, you will provide efficient and effective representation to indigent clients and other persons entitled by law as they pursue appellate review of lower court cases.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Represent clients in the Montana Supreme Court and before other legal bodies and government entities as necessary.
  • Provide legal defense in cases that may be high-profile, involve significant legal consequences, including the death penalty or life in prison.
  • Review and prepare complex appellate briefs, legal documents, and opinions.
  • Prepare record evidence, exhibits, and legal documents necessary to litigate appellate cases.
  • Interpret and apply state and federal laws and administrative rules.
  • Provide consultation, make recommendations, give appropriate legal advice, and/or facilitate legal decisions for the client.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys during the appellate process.
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in the State Bar of Montana.
  • Previous experience in criminal defense and experience with appellate legal concepts are preferred.
Working Conditions:

This position works in a variety of settings, including an office or court-setting, and may require occasional travel to attend court, trainings, and provide services to clients.
