Civil Engineering Pathways Internship

This internship opportunity is part of the Pathways Internship Program, designed for students who are actively pursuing their education.
To be eligible for this internship, candidates must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited educational institution for the duration of the internship, maintaining at least a half-time course load. Documentation supporting eligibility will be required. Interns may work throughout the academic year.
Eligibility Criteria

Current students enrolled in accredited institutions from high school through graduate level, including internships and pathways programs.
This role is specifically part of the Pathways Program and is available to students enrolled or accepted in a qualifying educational institution with at least half-time enrollment.
Key Responsibilities
This is a developmental role within the Office of Administration at the Federal Highway Administration. The internship aims to provide students with meaningful assignments that enhance their understanding of governmental issues and prepare them for future career opportunities.
The Pathways Student Intern (Civil Engineer) will work under the guidance of a Division Office Engineer. The program introduces the intern to the technical, administrative, and program management facets of highway engineering. Responsibilities include:
- Gaining familiarity with Title 23 codes and regulations, including administrative and auditing procedures associated with federal aid programs.
- Participating in meetings with Transportation Engineers and observing Caltrans and Local Agency discussions.
- Enhancing communication skills by collaborating with the PDT unit and other teams to gather information on engineering topics such as project statuses and discretionary grants.
The ideal candidate should possess proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, demonstrate basic communication and writing skills, and exhibit a strong willingness to learn while working both independently and collaboratively within the engineering team.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and meet program requirements.
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- All required documents must be submitted by the application deadline.
- Applications and resumes must be submitted online by the specified closing time.
- Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational institution on a half to full-time basis.
- Must be pursuing a degree relevant to this position.
- Availability to work at least 16 hours per week, with a preference for full-time during summer months.
- Grade qualifications must be met prior to the start date.
- Must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement.
- May work throughout the academic year.
- Must maintain student status and good academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Must provide course registration information at the beginning of each term and verification of academic status at the end of each term.
