Job Summary
The Phlebotomy Specialist I performs phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients in in-patient and out-patient settings. Key responsibilities include processing, organizing, labeling, and transporting specimens, as well as inputting and extracting data with the Laboratory Information System.
Responsibilities
- Process, organize, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing
- Input and extract data with the Laboratory Information System
- Perform clerical tasks, such as answering phones and faxing lab reports as needed
- Deliver personalized service using HM Service Standards
- Provide exceptional patient/customer experiences by following our Standards of Practice
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure strong communication and a seamless experience
- Perform special collections/procedures as directed and according to competency and policies/procedures
- File requisitions, reports, and other pathology materials appropriately
- Maintain a safe environment within the Laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security, and emergency preparedness
- Use department resources/equipment/supplies properly and efficiently
- Participate in departmental projects and activities, and seek continuing education opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies
Requirements
- 3 months of phlebotomy work or training experience, including data entry and specimen handling
- Neonatal/pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred
- CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification - ASCP, ACA, AMT, or NCCT
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and team player skills, with excellent customer service skills
- Possess basic computer knowledge, and operate multiple computer systems, including Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and Office software
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of specimen requirements for testing, and different specimen collection containers and media
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a customer service-focused manner
Travel
Travel specifications may vary by department. May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area, or outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
