Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Join the Boston Public Schools team as a Mechanical Engineer and play a crucial role in maintaining the district's facilities and ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for students and staff.

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for managing the daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, energy management systems, elevators, and fire protection systems in BPS buildings. This includes working with architects to develop upgrades and renovations, developing capital upgrades, and planning for school environmental and sustainability upgrades.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, energy management systems, elevators, and fire protection systems in BPS buildings.
  • Work with architects to develop upgrades and renovations in conjunction with systems and building upgrades.
  • Develop capital upgrades and plan for school environmental and sustainability upgrades.
  • Collaborate with the City of Boston Public Facilities Department and other city partners on similar project scopes.
  • Track metrics related to indoor environmental quality and building health, BPS sustainability/Green New Deal for BPS, and KPIs easily referenced by national standards.
Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • 7-10 years of experience employed in a professional setting.
  • Experience in school construction and contracts.
  • Familiarity with reading and reviewing plans and specs, working with building trades, and construction processes.
  • Experience with budget and financial management.
  • Experience using computers, Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive suite, and electronic communications tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior work in either Massachusetts state or local government with a knowledge of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Safety regulations and the Boston Fire Prevention Code.
  • Experience working in an educational setting, especially with children and teachers.
  • Familiarity with the city of Boston and Boston Public Schools.
