Position Overview

Under general oversight, the firefighter is responsible for managing and extinguishing fires, safeguarding lives and property, and ensuring the maintenance of all firefighting apparatus. The role will be stationed at the Van Wyck Fire Department during daytime hours, with potential adjustments to shift patterns as the service evolves to enhance 7-day coverage for the district.

Key Responsibilities

- Responds to fire alarms and emergency calls, executing necessary actions to effectively manage any fireground scenario.
- Conducts fire inspections and participates in pre-fire planning as assigned.
- Performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment, along with other related duties.
- Reports to the Fire Rescue Director of Lancaster County through the established chain of command.

Qualifications

- High School diploma with successful completion of firefighter training courses equivalent to South Carolina Fire Academy standards, including NFPA Firefighter I and II, Emergency Vehicle Driver Training, and first aid with Medical First Responder certification required within the first year.
- Hazmat Technician certification and pump operations training must also be completed within the first year of employment.
- A minimum Class E South Carolina Driver's License or CDL with tanker endorsement is required.
- At least two years of active participation in fire service is preferred. Combinations of education, training, and volunteer service will be considered.
