Job Summary:

The Birmingham VA Health Care System is seeking a highly skilled Dental Hygienist to join our team in the dental services area. As a Dental Hygienist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality oral health care to our nation's veterans.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine oral prophylactic care, including application of fluoride solutions, gross debridement, scaling and root planing procedures, and cleaning of dental prostheses.
  • Assess patient's medical, dental, anxiety/phobias, medications and comorbidities, and recognize age-related changes in individual patients.
  • Administer topical anesthetic agents and accomplish all procedures within standard infection control protocols.
  • Provide patient education on oral hygiene practices, periodontal disease, wellness, health maintenance, and the effects of illness, addictions, medications, and tobacco on the oral cavity.
  • Image patients using diagnostic-quality, accurately oriented, and exposed dental imaging techniques.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow computer security regulations.
  • Participate in patient identification and time out per TJC requirements and monitor patient condition during treatment.

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Be a Citizen of the United States.
  • Education: Possess an Associate degree or higher from an accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Licensure/Certification: Be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds, reaching above shoulder, both hands required, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, excessive noise, intermittent, working closely with others.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position with a Monday-Friday schedule.

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
