As an Urban Literacy Specialist, you will play a critical role in delivering evidence-based reading intervention to groups of students who are struggling with literacy skills.

Job Overview

As a Middle School Reading Intervention Teacher, you will be responsible for addressing the reading achievement of all SCSD students. You will work closely with the Director of English Language Arts to develop targeted literacy intervention plans and deliver instruction to 5 classes of 9th graders daily. Your primary role will be to address foundational skill gaps for students who are currently reading several years below grade level as indicated by multiple data sources.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering targeted literacy intervention to 5 classes of 9th graders daily using evidence-based strategies and resources as identified by district instructional leads
  • Utilizing planning tools and instructional resources provided by the department of English Language Arts
  • Setting short and long-term learning goals and targets for groups of students; planning targeted instruction matched to student need
  • Administering and interpreting appropriate assessments of various types (screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, etc.)
  • Utilizing effective formative assessment strategies during instruction, providing corrective feedback appropriately throughout lessons
  • Maintaining and submitting accurate and up-to-date records of all students' attendance, intervention integrity, and progress

About You

We are seeking educators who possess a sense of urgency and relentlessness in the pursuit of student success. You will be reflective, self-aware, adaptable, and open to challenges to current core beliefs and/or practices related to education, specifically literacy instruction and learning. You will think critically and be solution-oriented, taking initiative and communicating effectively to a variety of stakeholders.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • New York State (appropriate) Teaching Certification (required)
  • A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in literacy or related field preferred (required)

Salary and Benefits

The current starting salary for SCSD Teachers is $53,000. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement. Teachers will have opportunities to teach in our Summer School Programs, receiving an hourly rate of $42.69. Teachers of color or those with experience and a deep background in Urban Education may qualify for the District's Urban Fellowship Program.
