Internship Opportunity at Thrive Behavioral Health

Thrive Behavioral Health, a nonprofit mental health agency in Warwick, RI, is seeking 4th year undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Health Studies, and Human Development Family Sciences for a Behavioral Healthcare Internship.

Internship Details
  • Unpaid internship with the opportunity to earn course credit through your college or university.
  • Hybrid model with a minimum of 4 hours onsite at Thrive every other week and the remaining hours completed remotely.
  • Commitment to at least 8 hours a week for the entire semester.
Responsibilities

As a Behavioral Healthcare Intern, you will have the opportunity to engage in a learning model to better understand clients with severe and persistent mental illness. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Shadowing and assisting Thrive staff in their hands-on work to support clients' recoveries.
  • Conducting client interviews, entering data into a tracking system, and reviewing outcomes for quality improvement and grant reporting.
  • Writing educational materials to assist clients in preparing for therapy.
  • Coordinating with community partners to meet clients' social services needs.
  • Opportunities to shadow/assist staff in other departments, including fundraising, human resources, IT, and quality assurance.
What You Will Learn

This internship will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of working in a CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic). You will learn about:

  • Severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Community mental health.
  • Requirements for being a CCBHC.
  • Specific client diagnoses.
  • Navigating a client medical record.
  • Reading progress notes.
  • Trauma-informed care for non-clinical staff certification.
  • Person-centered care (holistic care).
  • Social determinants of health.
  • How a CCBHC partners with other community agencies.
  • Evidence-based treatment models for care.
  • Intake and assessment tools.
  • Case conferences.
  • Interviewing clients and learning how to communicate with people who have SPMI.
  • Using data to drive treatment outcomes.
  • Clients in crisis.
  • The work of SAMHSA and the National Council.
Requirements

To be eligible for this internship, you must be a 4th year undergraduate student majoring or minoring in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Health Studies, and Human Development Family Sciences. You must also be willing to commit to at least 8 hours a week for the entire semester and be comfortable working in a complex agency.

This internship is designed for students who want to gain self-confidence and real-world knowledge about working with clients in a community mental health/social service agency. You will have full guidance and support from our internship coordinator and will have the opportunity to create an individual plan tailored to your learning style.
