Job Summary

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the role of Wildlife Conservation Specialist. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in the eradication of nutria from the State of California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveys to detect, locate, and trap nutria
  • Assess habitat suitability and conduct visual observation and camera surveys
  • Trapping, nutria dispatch, and necropsies
  • Electronic data collection using ESRI Collector smartphone application
  • Use baits and lures and communicate with local landowners

Working Conditions

This is a physically demanding position that requires the ability to work atypical hours, including weekends, and may involve overnight travel. You must be willing to work in extreme weather conditions and on steep or uneven terrain.

Requirements

  • Must be able to swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Must be willing and able to competently use pellet pistols or firearms
  • Must be willing to handle live animals and carcasses, dispatch animals, and conduct simple tissue sampling and necropsies
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Must be able to safely and effectively operate watercraft and UTVs, as well as tow trailers

Benefits

This is a full-time, limited-term position with a 12-month term that may be extended to 24 months. You will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits, as well as State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.
