The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School is inviting applications for a new research faculty position.
The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) is a newly established endowed aerospace center, managing a Helicopter Observation Platform, various research vessels, including an electric flying boat, and a fleet of drones serving Florida and the United States.
ACES emphasizes advanced remote sensing and the development of aeronautical research platforms, supported by an ambitious strategic plan. The center is backed by an endowment and several ongoing multimillion-dollar grants from NASA, National Geographic, and other organizations.With this recruitment, we aim to establish a center of excellence in aerospace, focusing on transformative technical advancements to enhance our understanding and conservation of Earth.
ACES is directed by Dr.Ved Chirayath, the Vetlesen Professor of Earth Sciences, Mechanical, & Aerospace Engineering, National Geographic Explorer, and former NASA LAS director.
We are in search of talented and mission-oriented researchers to join the ACES team and collaborate with Dr.Chirayath in leading the recently completed ACES Drone Center, furthering the development of next-generation sensing technologies, airborne and spaceborne instruments, and research platforms.
We encourage candidates with a vision to design and fabricate innovative airborne systems, such as solar-powered fixed-wing electric drones for ocean mapping missions, to apply.
This research faculty position is supported by core funding from the ACES endowment and several ongoing multi-year grants and projects.
Support from the ACES Drone Center includes additional discretionary equipment funding for in-house drone fabrication, a newly renovated drone laboratory, and multiple office spaces.
Candidates will pursue research interests aligned with ACES, collaborate with fellow Rosenstiel scientists, and serve as principal or co-investigators on grants.
Note, this is not a tenure-track position, but it does have dedicated endowment support.This research faculty role includes a teaching expectation of a practical research-focused course, developed in collaboration with the ACES team, aimed at advancing the University of Miami's objectives to train the next generation of earth science-focused technologists and aerospace engineers.
With the establishment of the ACES Drone Center, we seek candidates with strong leadership and teamwork skills to spearhead the development of drones and airborne sensing technologies.
Candidates must possess a PhD in a relevant field, substantial experience with extramural funding as principal or co-investigators, support existing ACES research initiatives, and work closely under the guidance of the ACES director and the ACES team to expand the Center.
FAA Part 107 and/or Part 61 piloting certifications are required. We encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.Job Status:
