The Class A CDL Truck Operator reports to the Facilities & Operations Supervisor, Dispatcher, or Terminal Operations Supervisor. The Operator is tasked with operating a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a minimum capacity of 26,000 GVW to transport and deliver materials and equipment to various locations, ensuring compliance with the company's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards as well as all applicable DOT regulations. Responsibilities may include the use of various loading and unloading equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, hydraulic lifts, and wheel loaders. The Truck Operator should have a solid understanding of automatic routing systems, relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and regulations associated with vehicle operation and navigation.
This role operates within flexible parameters, with the primary objective of achieving excellence in all aspects of the position. Delivering high-quality service safely and efficiently minimizes accidents and errors while maximizing profitability.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all Health, Safety, and Environmental standards set by Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc.
- Ensure a safe working environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
- Transport materials and freight to and from production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, and containers using trucks and other equipment.
- Position trucks for loading or unloading, following the directions of the loading crew and verifying that vehicles and equipment are correctly aligned.
- Secure materials for transport using appropriate methods such as ropes, blocks, chains, or covers.
- Follow dispatch instructions to proceed to locations for material delivery or receipt.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure all mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is functioning properly.
- Maintain accurate logs of working hours, vehicle service, and repair status in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Obtain signatures or receipts for delivered materials and verify that all documentation is complete and accurate.
- Provide assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
- Transport necessary tools and supplies from storage or vehicles and return them after use.
- Report any vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damages to the appropriate supervisor.
Support the company's internal control processes by understanding, communicating, and complying with established policies and procedures, while also suggesting modifications to enhance business operations.
Communicate any operational issues, noncompliance with conduct codes, or policy violations to management.
Job Conditions:
This position is regularly exposed to various weather conditions and physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt due to the nature of the work environment. Personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, hearing protection, and respirators must be worn to mitigate risks.
Handling multiple safety and maintenance issues can increase pressure, and the workload may be unpredictable, particularly during peak times. Adaptability is essential due to critical deadlines and potential disturbances in workflow.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to: sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk on uneven surfaces; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; push and pull materials occasionally; crouch or bend consistently; reach overhead frequently; and communicate effectively. Visual acuity for vehicular navigation and mental dexterity for independent work with attention to detail are also required.
Qualifications:
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License
- Valid medical certification
- Minimum of 24 months of verifiable Class A driving experience within the last five years
- No more than two moving violations in the last three years
- No more than one preventable accident in the last three years
