Job Overview

Montana Construction is a family-owned and operated heavy construction business specializing in Sewer, Water, Bridge, and Emergency services across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Estimator with a focus on utility and heavy civil construction projects. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in estimating, reviewing bids, analyzing costs, and ensuring the accuracy and competitiveness of project pricing.

This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to develop comprehensive and precise estimates for large-scale construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Estimating
    • Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to prepare accurate and detailed estimates.
    • Analyze and evaluate project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor quotes.
    • Utilize HCSS estimating software to formulate estimates for utility and heavy civil projects.
    • Analyze project logistics and constructability, developing construction sequences for larger estimates.
    • Collaborate with an estimating team on larger projects and provide support as needed.
    • Perform accurate take-offs and validate owner/engineer bid quantities on public bids.
    • Complete take-offs for lump sum and private estimates.
    • Obtain, analyze, and maintain project data for use in estimates and bid preparation.
    • Develop and/or review bid packages and proposals.
  • Manage Risk
    • Identify and assess potential risks and uncertainties related to project estimation.
    • Develop contingency plans to mitigate identified risks.
  • Bid Review & Quality Assurance
    • Implement quality control measures to ensure accuracy and consistency in estimating processes.
    • Review and evaluate bids from staff, subcontractors, and suppliers.
    • Negotiate and secure favorable pricing and terms.
    • Ensure competitiveness in pricing while maintaining project profitability.
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with Project Managers and other team members to address issues and provide support during the construction process.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
    • Stay informed on industry trends and changes to ensure competitive and accurate bidding.
  • Reporting
    • Maintain detailed records of estimates, bids, and cost data.
    • Provide regular reports to senior leadership on estimating activities and outcomes.
Requirements
  • 15+ years of experience in Utility Construction Estimating.
  • 5+ years of experience specifically in Utility Construction Estimating.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and blueprints.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction materials, methods, and processes.
  • Extensive experience in sewer, water, and bridge construction.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and precision.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and estimating software, especially HCSS.
