About the Job
The City of Chesapeake is seeking a highly skilled Turf Manager to oversee and manage the specialized turf areas within the City's properties. This includes athletic fields, municipal facilities, recreation areas, and park systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement sustainable turf maintenance plans, new construction, and renovation projects.
- Supervise and administer turf maintenance crews, including completion of required reports, operating budget preparation, and monitoring.
- Manage staff time for efficiency and planning, and control assigned inventory, materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Develop and oversee work schedules of staff to include turf maintenance coverage 7 days a week.
- Develop, implement, and coordinate short and long-range plans pertaining to specialized turf areas, athletic fields, and park natural turf.
- Provide exceptional internal and external customer service, respond to service requests, and address complex customer service-related concerns.
- Investigate customer complaints and resolve issues or make recommendations for resolutions to team management.
Requirements
- Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in Agronomy, Turf Grass Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of full-time equivalent experience in athletic turf grass maintenance, including experience in the application of fertilizers and pesticides on turf grass, and a minimum of one year of lead or supervisory experience.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements and a Certified Applicators License, Class 3A and 3B, within six months of employment.
- Driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of principles, methods, tools, and practices used in specialized field and turf construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of occupational and equipment hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to park and recreational activities.
- Experience with budget preparations and monitoring, direct supervision, and oversight of multiple person staff, procurement activities, and basic knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
- Previous customer service experience.
