Role SummaryThe Nursing Unit Supervisor (NUS) is a professional, registered nurse who excels in communication, collaboration, and leadership. The NUS plays a vital role in executing the nursing strategic plan and priorities of the organization. They engage in unit and hospital decision-making processes and provide meaningful recognition to team members. Additionally, the NUS offers operational and administrative support to nursing leadership.
This role effectively manages staffing, supports quality and safety outcomes, oversees staff competency, participates in hiring, and addresses clinical and staff corrective actions, all while ensuring unit efficiency and quality care in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Hackensack Meridian Health.
In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the NUS assesses, plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates nursing practices and the nursing care delivery system while directly supervising front-line staff.
Our facility has received the American College of Surgeons (AcoS) Commission on Cancer accreditation with commendation for its cancer program, a distinction awarded to only a fraction of cancer programs nationwide. This recognition affirms our commitment to delivering exceptional expertise and quality care to every patient.
Key ResponsibilitiesA typical day for a Nursing Unit Supervisor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Implementing nursing practices based on evidence-based research, nursing policies, and standards of care to ensure safe and effective delivery of individualized patient-centered care.
- Maintaining ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other healthcare team members regarding patient status, care rendered, education, and treatment plans.
- Ensuring optimal patient and guest satisfaction in alignment with Meridian Health standards.
- Administering and titrating medications using advanced clinical documentation technology to guarantee the safest delivery of medications to our patients.
- Fostering patient and family-centered care aimed at enhancing health, wellness, disease management, and end-of-life care.
- Collaborating across disciplines to manage patient care plans and goals from admission to discharge, ensuring safe transitions and continuity of care.
The Nursing Unit Supervisor facilitates unit operations, oversees scheduling, payroll, and budgetary needs, and remains flexible to meet the unit's demands, including taking on patient assignments as necessary.
- Responsible for executing tasks delegated by the Nurse Manager, including patient assignments, disciplinary actions, education, mentoring, scheduling, budgeting, and any other assignments deemed necessary.
- The NUS also fills in for the Nurse Manager during their absence, demonstrating an understanding of scheduling, budget allocations, and hospital and regulatory policies and procedures.
Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License required
- Minimum of 2 years of recent nursing experience in the relevant specialty or equivalent
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification required
- National Certification acceptable to the Magnet Recognition Program and relevant to your current specialty (within two years of hire)
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, with a strong sense of accountability for improving the lives of our patients and their caregivers
- Exceptional focus on teamwork, dedication to ongoing education, and a passion for delivering the highest quality of care based on a strong patient focus are essential
- MSN preferred
- Supervisory or charge nurse experience preferred
