Accounting Manager Job Description

The Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. Our school offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. As a co-ed, nonsectarian institution, we serve a diverse community of approximately 1,700 students across two campuses - one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan.

The Accounting Manager will play a critical role in managing the maintenance of financial statements, reports, and systems. They will ensure that comprehensive controls are in place through processes including documentation, reconciliations, and enforcing policies. This position will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
This is a temp-to-perm opportunity with a salary range of $105,000-$125,000.
Please note that this is an onsite role and not performed remotely. The school retains its right to modify job duties in accordance with changing operational needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of the close process and compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain daily financial information flow to achieve efficient achievements of close and post deliverables, including P&L reviews, commentary, various analyses, schedules, and reporting.
  • Review account reconciliations for multiple accounts, including investments, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, pledge receivables, accrued expenses, bank reconciliation, miscellaneous accounts receivables, and payables.
  • Assist the CFO in ensuring accuracy and timeliness of income statements, balance sheets & other financial reports.
  • Support the CFO in developing and improving controls, policies, and processes as needed.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to facilitate field work for the annual audit process and address selections and resolutions with the finance team.
  • Stay up-to-date on accounting/financial reporting guidelines and implement accordingly.
  • Ensure cardholders submit Concur reports in a timely and accurate manner on a monthly basis to reconcile to the statement.
  • Manage credit card orders and Concur training as necessary.
  • Prepare budget reports and compile requests into a consolidated file for leadership review.
  • Work with the CFO to prepare various tax forms and financial data, such as surveys and statistics for CFO approval.
  • Assist the CFO in ensuring smooth implementation of new financial systems.
  • Foster positive relationships with team members and stakeholders.

Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required, with a CPA certification desired.
  • A proven record of strong financial acumen.
  • Collaborative, hands-on, results-oriented, and innovative mindset.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working with advanced technologies and collaboration tools like Google Workspace applications.
  • A positive attitude, excellent listening skills, and receptivity to feedback.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills to effectively communicate initiatives, facilitate discussions, and present to various levels of stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and manage complexities within non-profit accounting.
  • Capacity to handle confidential materials discreetly while maintaining high integrity.
  • Previous experience working with diverse colleagues/groups and navigating cross-functional or cross-departmental projects.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, thinks outside the box, and provides continuous flow of new ideas and process improvements.
  • High degree of organization, resourcefulness, efficiency, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to identify issues quickly and problem-solve accordingly, remaining calm under stress.
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to new ideas and procedures, with a consistent initiative to help streamline processes and improve efficiencies.
  • Analytically grounded and able to actualize ideas through execution.
  • Proficient in utilizing and learning new technologies like Google Workspace tools, Blackbaud, and Microsoft Office.
