Job Summary

The Stress Engineer I will play a critical role in supporting vehicle design, build, and test operations at Virgin Galactic. This position requires a strong understanding of structural analysis, finite element modeling, and collaboration with various disciplines to ensure the integrity of aircraft components and assemblies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural analysis to provide analytical definition and ensure structural integrity of components and assemblies via repairs and modifications.
  • Develop and utilize finite element models (global and discrete) to support design and testing.
  • Interface and collaborate with multiple disciplines to diagnose root causes and assign corrective actions for structural support considerations.
  • Play an integral role in the workflow release process for structural design.
  • Support review of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design and load requirements.
  • Directly support timely operations of build, ground tests, flight tests, and fleet operations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with a concentration in a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in Aerospace airframe / mechanical systems stress analysis.
  • Solid understanding of material properties & behavior, statics / free body diagrams, and structural load paths.
  • Strong teamwork and coordination skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of tools, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with composite materials analysis / structural substantiation.
  • Previous professional experience with Finite Element Modeling software.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Fatigue & Damage Tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with manufacturing-based ERP systems, such as Oracle.
  • Experience with the design of flight vehicles or vehicle systems to a set of requirements or standards such as CFR 14, Part 400, Part 23 and 25, military or NASA.
  • Hands-on experience with composite part fabrication and assembly process.
