Job Title: Substitute Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Substitute Nurse to join our team at the Ohio Department of Education. As a Substitute Nurse, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care and support to students with diverse needs.

Job Summary:

The Substitute Nurse will work closely with teachers, administrators, and other support staff to ensure that students receive the best possible care and education. This is a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of students and contribute to the success of our school community.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide personal assistance to students with disabilities, including assistance with daily living activities, behavior management, and instructional support.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision, performing tasks efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Assist students with mobility needs, help them use assistive and/or augmentative devices, and position them to take full advantage of each learning environment.
  • Administer student medications when a school nurse is not available, monitor ill students until a parent/guardian arrives, and respond to student requests for assistance.
  • Participate in programmed recreational activities as directed, assist with non-classroom activities, and contribute to an effective and positive work/learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records, submit required paperwork on time, and provide prompt notification of personal delays or absences.
  • Seek clarification when directives/expectations are unclear, use active listening and problem-solving techniques to resolve questions/concerns tactfully, and use diplomacy/self-control when dealing with other individuals.
Requirements:
  • Valid state department of education license/permit as determined at the time of appointment. LPN or RN is required.
  • Meets all mandated state/federal criteria, including approved degree, completion of requisite higher education credit hours/courses, or acceptable score on an authorized professional standards test.
  • Behavioral management skills substantiated by training/work experience, with the ability to address the needs of students with problem behavior and/or students requiring physical assistance.
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies, and administrative guidelines/procedures.
  • Demonstrates dependability/flexibility, reacts to interruptions/emerging priorities effectively, and embodies high ethical standards/integrity.
  • Exhibits consistent, impartial, and resourceful critical-thinking skills, maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment, and strives to develop rapport and serve as a positive role model for others.
