Job Summary:

This position is eligible for a $5,000 hiring incentive.

This position will supervise, instruct, guide, and counsel subordinate level workers in carrying out a variety of therapeutic activities which includes devising a schedule of work, itinerary, agenda, timetable, or establishing priorities for self and coworkers on a daily, weekly, or other periodic basis. This position reviews work products or achievements of subordinate workers, evaluates work and formulates plans for improvements, develops/implements treatment programs, supervises, controls, and improves its functioning or utilization. The Occupational Therapist 3 evaluates with physicians and higher-level therapists to provide neurophysiologic and psychosocial needs of individuals and adapts the various techniques of occupational therapy to meet these needs. This position develops and/or adjusts treatment or service plan for patient based on knowledge of patient's situation gained from interviewing and gathering case information, conducting therapy with individuals and groups in accordance with treatment plans and specific methodologies and techniques, choosing treatment modalities for their ability to produce predetermined goals such as increased muscle strength and coordination, sensory motor integration and/or increased awareness of, and ability to cope with one's surroundings and interpersonal relationships. This role will involve attending patient staff meetings, participating in discussions and problem-solving processes, and establishing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic work environment. This position designs and constructs adaptive, assistive, and supportive equipment for use of patients to improve motor functioning, strengthen and support muscles, or prevent malfunctions or deformity, confers with other staff members, specialists, consultants and members of the treatment team discussing client care, treatment, or case determination, and maintains appropriate clinical and administrative records regarding diagnosis, treatment, summary of patient's progress, conducting and participating in in-service training and staff development programs, attending supervisory and work system management meetings, participating in problem solving and decision making, compiling information and writing periodic reports on activities. This position confers with other practitioners and technical experts in order to broaden knowledge, acquire specific information, or obtain advice or consultation as well as perform related work as required.

Job Duties:

  • Supervises assigned therapy groups, evaluates new patients and consults patients, develops and/or adjusts treatment plan based on case information, chooses treatment modalities for patients integrating sensory motor skills, and ability to cope with one's surrounding and interpersonal relationships.
  • Conducts therapy with individuals and groups in accordance with treatment plans and specific methodologies and techniques; instructs, guides, and counsels subordinate level staff in carrying out therapeutic activities.
  • Maintains appropriate clinical and administrative records regarding diagnosis, treatment, and summary of patient's progress; documents patient care and prepares all required reports.
  • Confers with staff members, specialists, and members of treatment team, determining patient care and treatment plan; attends supervisory and work system management meetings; participates in problem solving and decision-making process.
  • Perform oversight & team lead special projects within the rehabilitation therapy department. Will supervise subordinate level professional and para-professional rehabilitation therapy staff members.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of occupational therapy, of scope of occupational therapy and its relationship to other professions, of anatomy, kinesiology and the therapeutic effects of exercise, of community resources for care and rehabilitation of mental health issues and of supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement, (CQI) and Lean methodologies
  • Skills in applying occupational therapy techniques, in evaluating patient's needs, planning therapeutic treatment programs and plans, explaining and demonstrating techniques to staff members, patients; in motivating patients and adapting therapeutic equipment to patient needs and skill in interpersonal relationships and ability to work as a team member in interdisciplinary meetings; ability to develop goals and objectives for the program.
  • Ability to assess patient's needs; develop treatment plans and goals; plan and carry out and evaluate treatment programs; communicate in oral and written form on the patient's progress toward goals and objectives; interpret and apply hospital rules, regulations, policies and procedures and protocols; establish positive therapeutic relationships with patients; implement and supervise patient work activities; establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with all hospital discipline personnel; implement and supervise patient work activities; develop effective patient treatment modalities; able to certify to drive a 12 passenger van.
  • Perform work and/or meetings at alternate locations and/or travel when necessary.

  • The ideal candidate will have:
  • Required certification and education with 2+ years of healthcare experience preferred
  • Candidates with Master's degree in a related field who are not certified must become certified within 6 months as a requirement to maintain professional/credentialed status.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Requires certification as an Occupational Therapist by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and licensure by the AZ Board of OT examiners (or must be attained within 6 months from the date of hire).
  • A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § .
  • Driving is required for State Business. - Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code ).
