Job Summary

The School Counselor will provide support to students in achieving their academic and personal goals. This includes working with students on an individual basis to discuss their interests and goals, assisting with course selection, and supporting students in solving personal problems related to academic achievement, home, and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with students in small or large groups to provide support for social-emotional needs, assist with course selection, and provide education on post-secondary options and enrollment processes.
  • Collaborate and communicate with MTSS, Special Education, Deans, and Administration members on a consistent basis.
  • Register students new to the school and orient them to the school.
  • Assist in balancing class size through schedule changes.
  • Be conversant in student test data and oversee student access to scores and knowledge of their meanings.
  • Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.
  • Work to prevent students from withdrawing from school.
  • Provide appropriate student information to colleges and potential employers.
  • Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Initiate/monitor homebound instruction.
  • Register students for summer school.
  • Coordinate and administer AP, PSAT, and SAT exams.
  • Attend staffings on individual students for special education programs and, where appropriate, initiate special education referrals.
  • Obtain and disseminate career information to students.
  • Confer with parents as necessary for individual student needs.
  • Conduct informational meetings and workshops for parents.
  • Consult with principals, deans, and faculty on the matters of academic achievement, student behavior, and social emotional concerns.
  • Examine and evaluate credentials for transfer students.
  • Provide sufficient information to Tazewell-Mason Counties Special Education Association when services are requested.
  • Keep current information concerning referral agencies in the community and providing assistance to families.
  • Supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarships, and employment applications.
  • Makes each student aware of progress made toward graduation requirements and notifies administration of tentative problems.
  • Attend meetings regularly with the assistant principal and building level team members.
