The Clinical Informatics Nurse Specialist at MedStar Health serves as the clinical expert, consultant, leader, researcher, and educator for clinical information and communication systems. This role requires collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, information services, vendors, and other informatics professionals to review, recommend, design, develop, implement, maintain, support, optimize, and evaluate clinical information and communication systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Oversight: Participate in the system development life cycle for clinical information systems and clinical communication systems, collaborating with key stakeholders to plan, assess workflows, gather requirements, design, develop, test, implement, evaluate, and maintain systems.
  • Optimization and Adoption: Identify opportunities for optimization of clinical system functionality and adoption, and explore how clinical information or communication systems can provide improvement.
  • Educational Content Development: Collaborate with other resources to develop and implement educational content related to clinical information and communication systems use at system implementation, user onboarding, and on an ongoing basis.
  • End-User Support: Support end users of clinical information and communication systems during systems implementation and throughout the life cycle of the system, including elbow support, troubleshooting, optimization, and change management.
  • Safety, Effectiveness, and Regulatory Compliance: Evaluate factors and develop solutions related to safety, effectiveness, cost, clinical quality, and regulatory compliance when developing and implementing clinical information systems.
  • Vendor Evaluation and Selection: Participate in MedStar Health projects for the selection of enterprise clinical information and communication systems, including the evaluation of vendor product presentations and demonstrations.
  • Data Sets, Visualizations, and Reports: Participate in the design, validation, implementation, and optimization of data sets, visualizations, and reports for constituents, promoting the integrity of nursing data collected, retrieved, and disseminated from clinical information systems.
  • Change Management and Innovation: Act as a change agent, anticipate future needs of clinicians, and innovate in the best interest of clinicians and patients, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.
  • Liaison and Collaboration: Liaise between groups where constituents, data, and technology interface.
  • Knowledge Dissemination: Contribute to the clinical nursing informatics body of knowledge by disseminating best practices through conference presentations, posters, and publication.
  • Continuing Education and Professional Development: Maintain and advance knowledge and skills in nursing informatics through continuing education and/or advanced education.
  • Consultation and Expertise: Provide consultation in the field of nursing informatics by participating on nursing and nursing informatics councils at the local or system level, and on hospital and relevant MedStar Health committees.
  • Clinical Practice and Guidelines: Collaborate with clinical practice and learning/education experts to ensure clinical information systems support evidence-based practice and MedStar's clinical practice guidelines.
  • Regulatory and Ethical Compliance: Adhere to the State Nursing Practice Act, regulatory, ethical, and accreditation standards, and organizational/departmental policies and procedures, upholding MedStar's SPIRIT Values and Code of Conduct.
