About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Conservation Specialist to join our team at the Smithsonian Institution. As a key member of our conservation team, you will be responsible for providing expert conservation services to our museum collections, including paintings, artworks, and other cultural artifacts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough examinations and assessments of museum collections to identify conservation needs and develop treatment plans.
  • Develop and implement conservation treatments, including cleaning, consolidation, and restoration of artworks and cultural artifacts.
  • Collaborate with curators, conservators, and other stakeholders to ensure that conservation treatments are aligned with the museum's collection management policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain accurate records of conservation treatments, including documentation of materials, techniques, and results.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest conservation techniques, technologies, and best practices through ongoing professional development and training.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in conservation, art history, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in conservation, with a focus on paintings and artworks.
  • Proven track record of successful conservation treatments and projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with curators, conservators, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
