Job Title: Data Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join our team at the Houston Food Bank. As a Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining our cloud-based data processing infrastructure.

Job Summary:

The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining large-scale production data infrastructure. This includes working on systems critical to the Houston Food Bank's current and future operations, debugging production issues, creating and maintaining technical documentation, and improving engineering standards, tooling, and processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement large-scale production data infrastructure
  • Work on systems critical to the Houston Food Bank's current and future operations
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Create and maintain technical documentation
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
  • Develop API integrations and troubleshoot reporting database environments and reports
  • Support the data warehouse in identifying and revising reporting requirements
  • Provide technical expertise on data storage structures, data mining, and data cleansing for peers
  • Assess tests, implement new or upgraded software, and assist with strategic decisions on new systems
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • 1+ years of experience writing and optimizing SQL queries, working with relational databases, and understanding database concepts
  • 1+ years of experience with data manipulation, analysis, and scripting using Python or R
  • 1+ years of experience using Git for version control, managing code repositories, and collaborating with other team members
  • 1+ years of RESTful APIs, experience with making API requests, and parsing JSON or XML responses
  • 2+ years of experience with creating structure models
  • 2+ years of experience in any AWS service or equivalent Cloud-based data warehouses or Data pipeline services
  • Experience with AWS services and concepts, such as S3, EC2, or Redshift preferred but not required
  • Experience with DBT for data transformation and modeling within a data warehouse environment preferred but not required
  • Exposure to BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Looker, with experience in creating visualizations, dashboards, and reports preferred but not required
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to work with a diverse population
  • Must be able to stay on top of tasks and projects to ensure deadlines are met
  • Must have a love for designing systems that are elegant abstractions over complex patterns/practices
  • Must be able to think about systems, services, and platforms, and write high-quality code
  • Must take pride in craftsmanship and working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems
  • Willingness and strong ability to learn new skills and computer programs efficiently
Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions.

Travel Requirements:

No travel is required for this role.

This role supports hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities, as necessary, and may require flexibility (e.g., times of disaster, community events, company events).
