Job Summary:

The Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as an Ultrasound Physicist in an academic career within the Department of Radiology at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor on the CHS (Clinical Health Sciences) Track.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in ultrasound physics, with interests and expertise in the application of advanced ultrasound methods in a busy clinical setting and translational research environment.

Responsibilities:Clinical Ultrasound Physics Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain institutional policies and guidelines for the safe and effective use of ultrasound imaging equipment and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot clinical issues on the ultrasound imaging equipment, including identifying and resolving image artifacts and other problems affecting clinical image quality.
  • Contribute technical input to inform decisions regarding the purchase of new ultrasound imaging equipment, perform acceptance testing, and conduct Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) of existing equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of the Imaging Sciences Section, Medical Director of Ultrasound, and Ultrasound Manager to address clinical issues.
  • Support the development of ultrasound-based histotripsy ablation programs.
Research Ultrasound Physics Responsibilities:
  • Conduct innovative ultrasound research independently and in collaboration with other investigators in the Department of Radiology and other departments and schools across campus and with industrial partners.
  • Write and assist in writing grant applications to secure extramural funding for ultrasound research projects.
  • Serve as an institutional subject matter expert on specialized principles of ultrasound.
  • Develop and maintain tools and infrastructure to facilitate core ultrasound research initiatives.
  • Attend scientific conferences and meetings to present research results, moderate sessions, and participate on committees and in working groups.
  • Mentor and conduct research with medical students, residents, clinical fellows, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and/or scientists.
Teaching Responsibilities:
  • Educate clinical and research faculty, fellows, residents, sonographers, nurses, trainees, and other staff about the basic physical and technical principles of ultrasound and safety issues related to diagnostic and interventional ultrasound.
  • Assist in overseeing medical student rotations in ultrasound.
  • Provide basic didactic material for medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Provide educational ultrasound lectures at national and international meetings, as well as other public venues external to UW.
  • Collaborate with the School of Diagnostic Sonography at UW by providing didactic lectures, consulting on curriculum design, and being available as a general ultrasound physics resource.

Education and Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD in medical physics or a related field, with expertise in ultrasound physics.
  • Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) is encouraged.
  • A track record of ultrasound-based basic or translational research and a track record of ultrasound physics education are assets.

Excellent communication skills are required for interacting with a variety of ultrasound stakeholders.

Work Type and Appointment:

Full or Part Time: 50% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
