Position Summary

The Craft Superintendent is responsible for the planning, supervision, and coordination of track maintenance teams, including inspection, maintenance, and repair operations.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Plans, oversees, and coordinates construction and maintenance tasks to ensure safety, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality outcomes.
  • Manages and implements inspection schedules, preventive maintenance, and repair programs for track systems and equipment to guarantee their safe and efficient operation.
  • Assists in the development and execution of relevant policies and procedures related to track and structures maintenance and inspection.
  • Evaluates the performance and effectiveness of track inspection and maintenance teams, ensuring adherence to work plans, budgets, performance standards, quality, and safety to meet project goals.
  • Investigates and resolves track failures, complex maintenance challenges, and critical safety concerns, implementing corrective actions promptly.
  • Recommends enhancements in work methods and techniques to address maintenance deficiencies.
  • Assigns, directs, and supervises the work of track personnel according to established work plans and priorities.
  • Provides recommendations regarding the formulation of policies and procedures for programs impacting safety and operational efficiency.
  • Enforces company policies and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts safety audits and leads safety meetings.
  • Ensures the safe and economical use of labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Offers technical support to track personnel.
  • Prepares and delivers verbal and written reports and recommendations to the project team.
  • Trains and supervises staff effectively.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in track construction, maintenance, and repair, including at least 4 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Familiarity with Federal Track Safety Standards (FTSS) and Federal Roadway Worker Safety (FRWS), with qualifications for Part 213.7 of FTSS.
  • Understanding of the methods and procedures necessary for large-scale track construction and maintenance, as well as system-wide inspections.
  • Knowledge of railroad rules, regulations, and procedures, along with regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex construction, maintenance, and safety issues.
  • Capability to assess and recommend new procedures to enhance and refine existing programs.
  • Experience in supervising staff and the ability to communicate instructions clearly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Works outdoors at various job sites.
  • Works in proximity to moving machinery, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, stoops, and crouches while navigating construction areas.
  • May lift, carry, and push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May climb poles, ladders, and large structures.
  • Occasionally works at heights of 20 feet or more above ground level.
  • May work in confined spaces on occasion.
  • Exposed to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Exposed to high noise levels.
