Underwriting Manager, Primary Casualty Wholesale

This position reports to the Product Line Director and is responsible for managing a team of commercial production underwriters and executing organizational goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute distribution strategy as provided by Product Line Leadership group
- Responsible for goals and metrics for region and assigned product line group
- Train, develop and mentor underwriting talent, including building a staff capable of effectively carrying out assignments and specific goals and recommends effective personal actions when needed
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across workgroups with flexibility to change direction quickly based on business needs
- Responsible for evaluating procedures and practices and implementing changes to improve workflows; ensures all business transactions and practices within span of control comply with all legal regulations and are in compliance with all underwriting policies and procedure
- Maintain an understanding of assigned product(s), services and solutions and initiates discussions with other workgroups as appropriate
- Drive change and innovation through continually seeking and implementing transformational solutions for customers and our associates
Requirements:
- Underwrite (larger, more complex) risks for given class(es) of business according to Markel's underwriting principles and in line with authority limits
- Write profitable business and implement remedial plans rapidly to address unprofitable business
- Understand and apply actuarial concepts as they apply to your line of business including risk pricing, technical rating, using data and analysis produced internally or by support teams to help inform strategic decisions
- Demonstrate deep understanding of the industry in which you operate
- Act as a referral point for underwriters on more complex risks e.g. on risk-by-risk trends, patterns, concerns, etc. regarding particular classes of business
- Manage team's performance, giving direction and support to others
