Position Overview:

The Clinical Pharmacy Operations Supervisor is accountable for overseeing all clinical and operational activities within the Hospital Pharmacy department. This role ensures compliance with clinical, legal, and regulatory standards while managing pharmacy personnel and students. The supervisor guarantees that all pharmacy clinical services align with the objectives and benchmarks of Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform all responsibilities of a Hospital Staff Pharmacist.
  • Supervise and manage Hospital Staff Pharmacists, technicians, and students, including scheduling duties.
  • Oversee departmental systems including UKG, Workday, and Pharmacy eCare.
  • Identify initiatives to enhance clinical skills and support essential organizational capabilities.
  • Establish meaningful personal objectives and prioritize daily tasks to achieve or surpass these goals.
  • Foster confidence and respect among colleagues through a positive and dynamic approach.
  • Utilize best practices and knowledge of customer issues to effectively complete tasks.
  • Apply understanding of key clinical business drivers to think broadly within the department.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, showcasing strong service, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Engage in customer service initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care.
  • Employ team effectiveness skills, integrating diverse perspectives to contribute to team objectives.
  • Collaborate with administrative, medical, nursing, and ancillary staff to develop and maintain clinical pharmacy services that meet hospital needs.
  • Oversee responses to Medication Management events in the safety reporting system.
  • Document and manage all controlled substances in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Conduct audits and inventories of controlled substances as per regulatory requirements.
  • Stay updated on changes in pharmacy practice through meetings, seminars, and continuing education, implementing necessary adjustments for the benefit of the hospital and its patients.
  • Ensure inspections of assigned Nursing Units and medication storage areas are conducted.
  • Develop and sustain clinical continuous quality improvement programs.
  • Manage departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the hiring process and assist with orientation for new department personnel.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for pharmacy staff, establishing performance goals and evaluation criteria.
  • Serve as the clinical representative on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and other relevant hospital committees.
  • Organize daily operational tasks, prioritizing patient care above all.
  • Ensure departmental operations comply with federal and state regulations.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding significant hospital matters.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Demonstrated superior technical skills and judgment to operate independently.
  • Competence in Sterile Compounding according to USP and , with appropriate use of PPE.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including bending, twisting, and reaching, as well as remaining stationary for short periods.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Understanding of written policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of management techniques, including quality improvement strategies.
  • Ability to motivate and direct staff effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and the capability to develop a structured approach to program implementation.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professional excellence characterized by sound judgment and ethics.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Capacity to make rational decisions quickly and independently.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and flexibility to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Bachelor's degree required; PharmD preferred.
  • Current, valid license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy required.
  • PGY-1 and a minimum of three years of experience as a licensed pharmacist required.

Special Requirements:

  • On-call availability for nights, weekends, and holidays is required.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous and non-hazardous medications.
  • Must be prepared to work during a hospital-declared emergency.
