Job Overview:
Shriners Children's Chicago is seeking a part-time Clinical Laboratory Specialist for our Clinical Lab Department. Join a dedicated team of professionals focused on enhancing children's lives. Responsibilities:
- The Clinical Laboratory Specialist accurately conducts and assesses technical procedures using established quality control methods with the assistance of automated, semi-automated, and/or manual techniques.
- Diagnostic tests are performed in various areas including chemistry, microbiology, hemostasis, hematology, blood banking, urinalysis, and venipuncture as required.
- Conducts phlebotomy on patients and staff as necessary, adhering to proper protocols for patient preparation, identity verification, specimen collection, and requisition documentation.
- Adheres to established laboratory quality control procedures and records corrective actions for any quality control failures.
- Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and documents activities accordingly.
- Possesses knowledge of proper specimen collection and rejection procedures.
- Conducts calibration of equipment as needed and performs accurate testing of received specimens according to established laboratory protocols.
- Reports test results promptly in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Communicates results for urgent, abnormal, critical values, and other special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
- Ensures accurate completion of test requisitions.
- Demonstrates proficiency in hematology, hemostasis, urinalysis, microbiology, chemistry, serology, and blood banking.
- Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when issues arise, notifying the Manager if unable to resolve the problem and documenting actions taken.
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies regarding universal precautions and safety protocols.
- Fosters effective working relationships and collaborates effectively as part of a departmental team, both inter-departmentally and intra-departmentally, to help achieve departmental goals and objectives.
- Maintains a clean work area, restocks supplies, and informs the manager of low inventory levels.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or a related field of laboratory science (biological, chemical, or physical) from an accredited institution.
- MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent.
Preferred:
- One to two years of relevant experience and/or training in a general clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
