Position Summary

The role of the Special Education Resource Teacher is to deliver targeted academic assistance to students with unique learning needs. This includes conducting assessments and developing, as well as executing, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Collaboration with classroom educators and support staff is essential to enhance both academic and behavioral outcomes for students facing challenges in their learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver both direct and consultative educational support tailored to the needs outlined in each student's IEP.
  • Design lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of assigned students.
  • Engage in co-planning and co-teaching with general education instructors.
  • Implement differentiated instruction within the general education classroom, Learning Center, or self-contained settings.
  • Assist general education teachers in applying accommodations and modifications for students included in mainstream classes.
  • Create and sustain a resource-rich classroom environment that showcases student work aligned with their educational goals.
  • Conduct various academic assessments and interpret the results effectively.
  • Prepare academic evaluation reports and present findings during IEP meetings.
  • Formulate IEP objectives and suggest suitable services and modifications based on individual student assessments.
  • Manage a caseload of students, coordinating and participating in IEP meetings.
  • Maintain detailed service logs and submit them to supervisors regularly.
  • Monitor student progress through data collection and communicate findings to teachers and parents.
  • Complete necessary IEP documentation using the designated online system.
  • Adhere to all relevant special education laws and policies.
  • Participate in team meetings focused on student support and progress.
  • Adapt to a dynamic work environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Oversee the work of Special Education Paraprofessionals in an academic context.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Certifications:
Mandatory:
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Added Authorization in Autism Spectrum (if holding a Preliminary/Clear credential), or
  • Enrollment in courses required for the AAAS certificate (if an Intern).
Experience:
Preferred:
  • Fluency in both Spanish and English.
  • Experience in a Special Education environment.
Credentials:
  • Required:
    • A valid Preliminary or Clear California Education Specialist Instruction Credential, Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe, or
    • Eligibility for Education Specialist Instruction Intern through an accredited program.
  • Preferred:
    • A valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with English Learner authorization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of special education principles and practices, including:
    • Ability to implement various instructional strategies to meet student needs.
    • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate curriculum and its adaptation.
    • Familiarity with assessment tools and interpretation of results.
    • Awareness of special education regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Collaborative approach to working with school personnel and families.
  • Capacity to accept constructive feedback.
  • Effective communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
  • Proficient in written communication.
  • Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word.
  • Physical ability to navigate the work environment.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
Physical and Environmental Considerations:
  • This role may involve extended periods of sitting or standing in a moderately noisy environment, with no exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision for reading materials and screens.
  • Effective communication skills are necessary for interaction with others.
  • Manual dexterity is needed for data entry and operation of office equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of items weighing less than 20 pounds may be required.
  • Ability to travel as needed for work purposes.
