Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Remediation Manager to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our environmental remediation team, you will be responsible for overseeing the remediation of contaminated sites, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and developing effective site management plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement site remediation plans, including goals, objectives, and timelines.
  • Conduct site investigations and analyze data to determine environmental site conditions.
  • Develop and review contracts, requests for proposals, and bids for environmental remediation consultants and contractors.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of consultants and contractors, ensuring technical soundness of remedial efforts.
  • Participate in community relations activities, including contact with the media and responding to written and verbal inquiries.
Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university majoring in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering.
  • Eight years of relevant post-degree engineering experience, with at least four years in work related to environmental remediation of contaminated land.
  • At least three years of experience in supervision of professional engineers or geologists.
  • At least one year of experience in an administrative capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-time graduate work in the designated fields of engineering may be substituted for the required non-supervisory or administrative experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two years of service with the District as a Site Remediation Specialist.
  • Civil service status as a Site Remediation Specialist.
Working Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals. Involves working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities and heavy equipment, exposure to open excavations and slopes on remediation sites, and may involve contact with hazardous or toxic material. May require frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of chemical considerations for environmentally impaired sites, and soil/water sampling techniques and protocols.
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced and experimental treatment and cleanup technologies as they pertain to site remediation.
  • Extensive knowledge of contracting principles, practices, and procedures relevant to site investigation and remediation.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and other guidelines governing remedial actions and activities related to hazardous waste sites.
  • Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature, and sources of information in environmental site remediation.
  • Ability to complete a 40-Hour Hazardous Worker Training program.
  • Ability to use computer spreadsheets and word processing applications.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others and to establish an environment of high morale and professionalism.
  • Ability to solve unusual and complex problems through the adaptation of existing principles and policies.
  • Ability to develop detailed specifications, reports, and designs from general outline assignments.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
