Job Title: Water Quality Specialist

Join the City of New York's Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering as a Water Quality Specialist. In this role, you will assist in conducting field inspections to ensure compliance with regulations aimed at improving the operating conditions of various engineered systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in performing field inspections, including regulatory compliance review of Water Maintenance Plans, Operational Records, Chemical Treatment, and Mechanical Equipment.
  • Train to generate and submit field inspection reports according to the Bureau's inspection protocols.
  • Provide customer service to regulated communities, including building owners, facility maintenance personnel, and superintendents.
  • Recommend improvements to regulatory compliance and corrective actions to eliminate environmental health hazards.
  • Represent the Department in an enforcement capacity, serving violations/summonses to business owners and attending Tribunal hearings.
Requirements:
  • Masters degree in environmental or chemical engineering, limnology, environmental science, marine science, geology, biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, or health science.
  • Or baccalaureate degree with 24 semester credits in one or a combination of the above areas, plus one year of experience in water quality planning, management, or research.
  • Or associate degree with 24 semester credits in one or a combination of the above areas, plus three years of experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Academic and/or professional background in environmental or chemical engineering, limnology, environmental science, marine science, biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, or health science.
  • Ability to work in the field, including travel throughout the five boroughs.
  • Strong intrapersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
