Position: Construction Engineer – Surface Transportation

Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc. (CMT) is a comprehensive consulting firm dedicated to four main sectors: Aviation, Surface Transportation, Water Resources, and Building & Site Services. CMT offers planning, environmental, design, and construction oversight services for projects that vary in complexity. We are currently seeking a full-time Construction Engineer to enhance our Surface Transportation team. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong leadership skills, the ability to collaborate effectively, and a commitment to continuous learning.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and oversee on-site construction inspections, observations, and documentation, while supervising junior staff to support project managers.
  • Act as the on-site liaison between the engineer, contractor, and client, providing assistance as needed for effective project execution.
  • Prepare, maintain, and distribute essential construction documentation, including daily reports, payment estimates, change orders, shop drawings, material submissions, progress schedules, project correspondence, testing results, and record drawings, adhering to client and company protocols.
  • Assist with the planning and design of civil and transportation projects, which may involve drafting, surveying, materials testing, or other assigned tasks.
  • Projects typically require a solid understanding of construction documents (plans and specifications), including site development, grading, drainage, asphalt and concrete paving, pavement marking, signage, erosion control, coordination with other disciplines, utilities, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and construction scheduling.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • General knowledge of transportation construction, site development, and civil infrastructure projects, with the ability to interpret construction documents.
  • Prior construction experience or internships are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Willingness to complete required training classes for clients, including Quality Management Training for HMA, PCC, and aggregates.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD or MicroStation for civil and site design projects.
  • Capability to manage personnel and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work independently while managing time and multiple projects efficiently.
  • Willingness to accept travel assignments and work overtime as necessary to meet project demands.
  • Successful completion of a security background check, including employment history and criminal records checks as applicable.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record with access to transportation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
