Senior Communications Strategist for Architecture and Planning

Columbia University is seeking a seasoned professional to fill the role of Director of Communications for the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). This position offers an exceptional opportunity to shape the strategic communications narrative of a world-renowned institution.

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Admissions and Outreach, the Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications plan that showcases GSAPP's mission, academic programs, research, admissions, and events. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in crafting compelling narratives, managing media relations, and fostering a strong online presence.

The successful candidate will work closely with the School's Dean and senior leadership to advise on communications matters, identify new opportunities for innovative storytelling, and ensure the consistent identity of GSAPP across all internal and external audiences. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing a strategic communications plan that aligns with GSAPP's mission and vision
  • Overseeing the visual materials and written communications for internal and external audiences, including website content, print and digital promotional tools, and social media platforms
  • Fostering media relations and engaging journalists, publications, and other external contacts to generate features and content about the GSAPP community
  • Representing the Dean and GSAPP at public events and managing media visits as needed

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree and 4-6 years of related experience in architecture or a related field
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience in communications and media relations
  • Knowledge of online and social media platforms, print design and production, and familiarity with media outlets
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and work well under pressure
